"Paddling a large surfboard on flat-water, what is the point?” That is what I first thought when I first came across the sport of Stand Up Paddle Boarding, also known as SUPP. I could not be more wrong. SUPP is a great sport which requires a powerful execution of paddle techniques to move forward and yet a light touch or you will simply compromise your balance and end up in the water. It’s strange because you are standing up on water, no sitting or lying over a board. “mmmh, so this is what Jesus felt like, when he walked on water” I thought to myself, when I first stood on a SUPP board. However paddling a board in a location of breathtaking beauty, such as Lake Arenal will prove an awesome experience. The location combines warm water, coves with still conditions, or the more challenging open portion of the lake. Another amazing setting can be the open ocean water near Dominical, on the southern coast of Costa Rica, especially at sunset.
Once a certain degree of comfort is reached, one can move one the more dynamic ocean water environment. Watch the YouTube video on the left to see what some of the advanced paddlers are doing. However it is certainly necessary to get started in a flaw water environment, preferably with no wind or current.
So when are you trying SUPP? Or if you already have, Costa Rica is another great location to experience it!
